=== Early Years (1958–1965) ===

The roots of The Guess Who trace back to 1958, when a group of Winnipeg teenagers formed a band called '''Allan and the Silvertones''', later renamed '''Chad Allan & the Expressions'''. The group went through numerous personnel changes in its early years, eventually settling into a lineup that included vocalist [[Chad Allan]], guitarist [[Randy Bachman]], bassist Jim Kale, and drummer Garry Peterson.

In 1965, the band released a cover of [[Johnny Kidd & the Pirates]]' "Shakin' All Over" under the name '''Guess Who?''' — a deliberate ploy by their record label to create mystery around their identity and encourage radio play. The single became a surprise hit in both Canada and the United States, and the band adopted the name permanently, dropping the question mark.

=== Breakthrough and Classic Lineup (1965–1975) ===

Following Chad Allan's departure, [[Burton Cummings]] joined the band in 1966 as lead vocalist and keyboardist. The Cummings–Bachman songwriting partnership proved extraordinarily fruitful. By the mid-1970s, changing musical tastes and internal tensions took their toll. Burton Cummings departed in 1975 to begin a solo career, effectively ending the classic era of the band. The group attempted to continue with new members but disbanded in 1975. A brief reunion tour took place in 1977, though it did not result in new recordings of note.

=== Revivals and Continued Legacy (1983–present) ===

The Guess Who has reunited on several occasions over the decades. A notable reunion of the classic lineup occurred in 1983, followed by further activity in the late 1980s. Since the 1990s, Garry Peterson — the sole continuous member — has led an ongoing touring version of the band under the Guess Who name, performing their classic catalog for new generations of fans.

Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman have periodically reunited for joint tours billed as "The Bachman-Cummings Tour," celebrating the band's legacy while also pursuing their individual projects.
