Rooted in the early 1990s underground [[rave]] scene, the band developed a volatile fusion of [[breakbeat hardcore]], [[techno]], [[industrial]], and punk that placed them among the most commercially successful and critically significant electronic acts of all time. Along with [[The Chemical Brothers]] and [[Fatboy Slim]], The Prodigy are widely credited as pioneers of the [[big beat]] genre. They have sold an estimated 25 million records worldwide and scored seven consecutive UK number one albums. The band's classic lineup of Howlett, vocalist and dancer Keith Flint, and MC Maxim defined their peak era; Flint died in 2019, and the band continues as Howlett and Maxim.
