=== Origins and Formation (1970–1974) ===
The name "Jefferson Starship" first appeared in 1970 on Paul Kantner's concept album ''Blows Against the Empire'', credited to "Paul Kantner/Jefferson Starship." This science-fiction-themed record featured Kantner, Grace Slick, and other musicians including members of Jefferson Airplane and the Grateful Dead.

By the early 1970s, Jefferson Airplane was winding down. Kantner, Slick, and David Freiberg (who had joined Airplane in its later years) collaborated on albums like ''Sunfighter'' (1971) and ''Baron von Tollbooth & the Chrome Nun'' (1973). In 1974, the group formally became Jefferson Starship, incorporating remaining Airplane personnel and new members: John Barbata (drums), Papa John Creach (violin), Craig Chaquico (lead guitar), and initially Peter Kaukonen on bass (soon replaced by Pete Sears).
