==Early Life and Background== Born in New York City and raised in Darien, Connecticut, Moby was given his nickname as a nod to his distant relation to Herman Melville, author of ''Moby-Dick''. He showed an early interest in music, learning guitar as a child and later immersing himself in the New York punk scene as a teenager. He studied philosophy briefly at the University of Connecticut before dropping out to pursue music full-time. A devout Christian and longtime vegan, Moby has been outspoken about animal rights, environmentalism, and social justice throughout his career. He relocated to Los Angeles in the 2000s and has remained a prominent figure in both music and activist circles.
