=== Early Years (1958β1965) === The roots of The Guess Who trace back to 1958, when a group of Winnipeg teenagers formed a band called Allan and the Silvertones, later renamed Chad Allan & the Expressions. The group went through numerous personnel changes in its early years, eventually settling into a lineup that included vocalist Chad Allan, guitarist Randy Bachman, bassist Jim Kale, and drummer Garry Peterson. In 1965, the band released a cover of Johnny Kidd & the Pirates' "Shakin' All Over" under the name Guess Who? β a deliberate ploy by their record label to create mystery around their identity and encourage radio play. The single became a surprise hit in both Canada and the United States, and the band adopted the name permanently, dropping the question mark.
