'''The Prodigy''' is an English [[electronic music]] group formed in 1990 in Braintree, Essex, by songwriter and producer '''Liam Howlett'''. Rooted in the early 1990s underground [[rave]] scene, the band developed a volatile fusion of [[breakbeat hardcore]], [[techno]], [[industrial]], and punk that placed them among the most commercially successful and critically significant electronic acts of all time. Along with [[The Chemical Brothers]] and [[Fatboy Slim]], The Prodigy are widely credited as pioneers of the [[big beat]] genre. They have sold an estimated 25 million records worldwide and scored seven consecutive UK number one albums. The band's classic lineup of Howlett, vocalist and dancer Keith Flint, and MC Maxim defined their peak era; Flint died in 2019, and the band continues as Howlett and Maxim.

==History==

===Origins and Formation (1990–1991)===

Liam Howlett began making music as a teenager in Essex, influenced by early electro, hip-hop, ska, and rave. After Howlett gave a mix tape to his friend Keith Flint — with a collection of his own original tracks recorded on the flip side — Flint and fellow dancer Leeroy Thornhill urged Howlett to form a group around the music. The tape had the word "Prodigy" scratched onto it, borrowed from Howlett's own DJ moniker and the name of a Moog synthesizer. The three were soon joined by MC and vocalist '''Maxim''' (Keith Palmer), then performing as Maxim Reality, and female dancer and vocalist Sharky, a friend of Flint's. The Prodigy's first public performance took place at Club Labyrinth at the Four Aces in Dalston, London. Their debut single, "What Evil Lurks," was pressed in a limited run of 7,000 copies in early 1991, followed shortly by "Charly," which sampled a meowing cat from a British public information film and reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart.

===''Experience'' and Rave Breakthrough (1992–1993)===

The debut album ''Experience'' (1992) collected the band's club singles and established them as a significant force in British rave culture. A landmark of early 1990s hardcore, the record sold well for an independent dance release, though its novelty sampling approach earned some dismissal as "toytown techno." The band declined repeated offers to appear on mainstream British television — their 1991 performance on BBC2's ''Dance Energy'' remains their only UK studio TV appearance — and instead built their following through live shows and heavy rotation on [[MTV Europe]]. The band avoided mainstream overexposure by design, a philosophy Howlett maintained throughout their career.

===''Music for the Jilted Generation'' (1994)===

The second album ''Music for the Jilted Generation'' (1994) marked a decisive shift: longer, more complex tracks drawing on [[hip-hop]], rock riffs, ambient [[techno]], and rave energy. It debuted at No. 1 in the UK and sold more in its first two months than ''Experience'' had in two years. The album was nominated for the [[Mercury Music Prize]] and produced the singles "Poison" and "Voodoo People." Howlett, unwilling to compromise, reaffirmed his commitment to making the band a "hard dance" act and not a pop one. Following its international success, the band added live guitarist Jim Davies for select tracks and tours.

===''The Fat of the Land'' and Global Dominance (1995–1999)===

''The Fat of the Land'' (1997) became The Prodigy's defining statement and one of the most commercially successful electronic albums ever made. Recorded in London and New York, it debuted at No. 1 in both the UK and the US and sold over 10 million copies worldwide, earning a Guinness World Record as the fastest-selling dance album in UK chart history at the time. The preceding singles "Firestarter" (1996) and "Breathe" (1996) both hit No. 1 in the UK; the third single, "Smack My Bitch Up," reached the UK top ten but generated intense controversy over its lyrics and music video, which was banned by several broadcasters. Keith Flint — originally a dancer — had by this point become the band's ferocious on-stage frontman, his punk-styled appearance and manic energy central to the band's visual identity. The band won [[Brit Award]]s for Best British Dance Act in 1997 and 1998, plus multiple [[MTV Video Music Award]]s and [[MTV Europe Music Award]]s.

===Transition and Solo Period (2000–2008)===

Leeroy Thornhill departed in 2000 to pursue a solo career as a DJ and producer. The fourth studio album ''Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned'' (2004) was essentially a Liam Howlett solo project: neither Flint nor Maxim appeared on the official record, with Howlett instead inviting guest vocalists including [[Juliette Lewis]] and members of [[Kool Keith]]'s circle. The album charted well but was seen as a departure from the classic band dynamic.

===''Invaders Must Die'' and Reunion (2009)===

The fifth album ''Invaders Must Die'' (2009), released on the band's own Take Me to the Hospital label, marked the first Prodigy record since 1997 to feature all three core members — Howlett, Flint, and Maxim — fully involved. Co-produced in part with James Rushent of [[Does It Offend You, Yeah?]], the album debuted at No. 1 in the UK and was hailed as a return to their raw, confrontational roots. [[Dave Grohl]] played drums on the track "Run with the Wolves." The band toured extensively in support, headlining major festivals worldwide.

===''The Day Is My Enemy'' (2015)===

The sixth album ''The Day Is My Enemy'' (2015) debuted at No. 1 in the UK, extending the band's remarkable run of consecutive chart-topping records to seven. It was supported by extensive touring across Europe and beyond.

===Death of Keith Flint (2019)===

On March 4, 2019, Keith Flint was found dead at his home in Essex, weeks after the band had completed a run of live dates in Australia and New Zealand. He was 49. The band immediately cancelled all remaining tour dates. Fans mobilized on social media to push the band's 1996 single "Firestarter" back to No. 1 on the UK chart in tribute. Howlett announced in August 2019 that The Prodigy would continue, with plans to complete new material as a tribute to Flint. A documentary about the band's history was announced in early 2021, to be directed by long-time collaborator Paul Dugdale.
