The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (commonly known as Coachella) is an annual music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Co-founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen in 1999, it is organized by Goldenvoice, a subsidiary of AEG Presents.
History
The origins of Coachella date back to a 1993 concert that Pearl Jam performed at the Empire Polo Club while boycotting venues controlled by Ticketmaster. The show's success validated the site's viability for large-scale events.
- Inaugural Year (1999): The first festival was held in October 1999.
- The Spring Shift (2001): After skipping 2000, the festival returned in April 2001 to avoid the extreme desert heat.
- 25th Anniversary (2026): In 2026, Coachella celebrated its 25th anniversary with headliners Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, and Karol G.
Venue and Logistics
The festival takes place on the 78-acre main grounds of the Empire Polo Club. Because Indio is in a desert environment, temperatures often exceed 100°F (38°C) during the day.
Stages and Tents
- Coachella Stage: The main stage for the largest headliners.
- Sahara Tent: Known for massive LED displays and EDM.
- Sonora: An indoor, air-conditioned stage focusing on punk and Latin rock.
Art and Culture
Beyond music, Coachella is a major showcase for visual arts and large-scale installations. It also remains a significant driver of global fashion trends, popularized by "festival style" aesthetics.
