Mixcloud is a British online audio streaming platform specialising in long-form audio content including DJ mixes, radio shows, and podcasts. Mixcloud is a British online music streaming service that allows for the listening and distribution of radio shows, DJ mixes and podcasts, which are crowdsourced by its registered users.

Mixcloud is home to a unique catalogue of 50 million DJ mixes, radio shows and podcasts handcrafted by the world's finest DJs, online radio stations and cultural tastemakers, available to be listened to for free across all devices. The platform distinguishes itself from mainstream music streaming services through its focus on long-form content, its blanket music licensing model, and its commitment to ensuring that rights holders receive fair royalties for all music played on the platform.

History

[edit]

Founding (2008–2009)

[edit]

Mixcloud was founded as a startup company through the lean startup process in 2008 by Nikhil Shah and Nico Perez, who met at the University of Cambridge. Developers Mat Clayton and Sam Cooke were added to the team in its early stages.

The startup was established in London, England, operating initially from a warehouse in West London. The initial concept emerged from the founders' frustration with the rampant piracy of DJ mixes and radio shows online, where creators struggled to share content legally without risking copyright infringement or takedowns. Shah and Perez aimed to create a dedicated platform that would serve as a legal alternative, enabling DJs, radio hosts, and podcasters to upload and stream their work while ensuring royalties were paid to rights holders through innovative licensing agreements.

The platform launched publicly in 2009, positioning itself as a legal home for long-form audio content at a time when DJ mixes and radio recordings had no suitable legal streaming outlet.

Early Growth (2010–2015)

[edit]

As of 2012, Mixcloud was reported to have over 3 million active users and over 500,000 registered Facebook application users.

By 2015, Mixcloud had attracted 12 million monthly listeners and over 8 million uploaded shows from more than a million creators, expanding beyond DJ mixes to encompass diverse audio content.

Licensing Deals and Funding (2017–2018)

[edit]

In October 2017, Mixcloud signed a direct licensing agreement with Warner Music. This followed earlier licensing arrangements with other major rights organisations, helping to legitimise the platform's vast library of user-uploaded content.

In April 2018, Mixcloud announced that it raised $11.5 million from WndrCo LLC, a holding company based in Los Angeles and San Francisco that invests in media and technology businesses for the long term, to fund Mixcloud's expansion globally.

Mixcloud Select (2018)

[edit]

In 2018, Mixcloud launched a fan-to-creator subscription service called Mixcloud Select. A few months later, the service added new features including the ability for audio creators to offer their subscribers exclusive content behind their own paywall.

Mixcloud Live (2020)

[edit]

In 2020, Mixcloud launched Mixcloud Live, solving real challenges for creators who want to stream legally and monetise online. The feature allowed DJs, radio hosts, and other audio creators to broadcast live performances directly through the platform with full music licensing coverage, removing the legal risks typically associated with live streaming copyrighted music on other platforms.

Acquisition of Encore (2024)

[edit]

In September 2024, Mixcloud announced the acquisition of Encore, one of Europe's leading online music marketplaces for booking live musicians. Encore, founded ten years earlier, helps artists make money through live music by connecting them with customers looking for live acts for their events. It has facilitated over 50,000 bookings and helped musicians earn £25 million through live performances.

Upon joining Mixcloud, Encore continued to operate as an independent brand. The acquisition also saw Nikhil Shah, co-founder of Mixcloud, joining Encore as its new Chairman, having been an angel investor in the company since 2019.

Features

[edit]

Audio Streaming

[edit]

Mixcloud allows all users to browse and stream audio content uploaded on its site. Registered users can upload content such as radio shows, DJ mixes and podcasts, as well as promote and distribute their content through Mixcloud's own social networking widget.

Waveform Display and Timestamped Comments

[edit]

Each audio upload on Mixcloud is displayed with a waveform visualization. Listeners can leave comments tied to specific points in a recording, enabling direct interaction between creators and their audiences.

Mixcloud Select

[edit]

Mixcloud Select is the platform's fan-to-creator subscription model. This feature allows listeners to subscribe monthly to a specific creator's profile, starting at a minimum fee of $2.99, with creators able to set higher tiers to offer exclusive perks like early access to mixes, extended shows, or bonus content. Under the subscription revenue model, creators receive 60% of the net subscription income after deductions for royalties and transaction fees.

Mixcloud Live

[edit]

Mixcloud Live enables creators to broadcast live audio and DJ sets to their audiences in real time. Unlike most streaming platforms, Mixcloud's licensing agreements cover live streams, allowing DJs and radio hosts to play copyrighted music without the risk of takedowns or muting.

Mixcloud Pro

[edit]

Mixcloud Pro is a subscription tier aimed at professional creators, offering advanced analytics, scheduling tools, priority support, and enhanced monetisation and promotional features.

No Downloads Policy

[edit]

Mixcloud prohibits users from downloading audio content from its platform for licensing reasons. Co-founder Nikhil Shah commented on this restriction: "Not offering downloads has been a challenge for us in terms of persuading the content creators to use a platform like ours." The platform operates as a streaming-only service, ensuring royalties are attributed to rights holders on the basis of streams rather than downloads.

Social and Community Features

[edit]

Registered members may join a group, a collection of other users who share a common interest, which will periodically update the user when new content related to the group is available. Users can follow creators, repost content, and share tracks across other social media platforms.

Licensing Model

[edit]

Mixcloud's approach to music licensing sets it apart from most user-generated content platforms. Rather than relying on individual track-by-track licensing, Mixcloud operates under blanket licensing agreements with major rights organisations and music groups. Mixcloud has licensing deals with major music groups including Merlin, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. This model allows creators to upload mixes containing multiple licensed tracks without fear of copyright takedowns, while ensuring that artists and rights holders receive royalties for every stream.

Culture and Community

[edit]

Mixcloud has cultivated a strong following among DJs, underground music enthusiasts, and radio communities worldwide. The platform is particularly associated with electronic music, club culture, and independent radio, and has become a key archival resource for DJ sets and radio broadcasts that would otherwise be difficult to distribute legally.

Notable figures in the DJ and radio world who have maintained presences on Mixcloud include prominent names from the BBC Radio 1 and Radio 6 Music communities, as well as independent stations from around the globe. The platform has also been used to preserve and share historically significant recordings, such as digitally restored disco and house DJ mix tapes from New York City clubs of the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Competition

[edit]

Mixcloud's primary competitors in the audio streaming space include SoundCloud, Spotify, and podcast-focused platforms. However, Mixcloud's specific focus on long-form DJ mixes and radio shows, combined with its blanket licensing model, occupies a distinct niche that sets it apart from broader music streaming services.

Company Information

[edit]

Mixcloud's main headquarters is located at Hackney Road, London. The company has employees across six continents, including Europe, North America, and Asia. As of 2024, Mixcloud reported approximately 25 million monthly active users.
